Lithium Industry Expert Joe Lowry on Lithium Prices

Lithium prices hit an all-time high in 2021 as electric vehicle (EV) sales went through the roof.
Investors are paying much closer attention to battery metals such as lithium as the demand for essential metals used to power EVs continues to surge.
The lithium market outperformed expectations last year. Prices traded on the Chinese spot market above US$50 per kilogram. That is a 550% rise from last year.
“The Morgan Stanley’s of the world will take a spreadsheet and say every junior project is going to come online on time and the price is going to crater, they’re calling for the spot price to be $13,000 for carbonate. The China spot price at the end of this year was over $50,000. I’m just calling bullshit on that. I don’t know if it is going to $70,000, but there is no reason why it can’t go to $70,000. The EV revolution isn’t going to be stopped by the price of lithium, it’s going to be delayed by the lack of lithium.” – Global Lithium CEO Jow Lowry
The major catalysts rocketing the lithium price to the moon was the extent of growth in the EV industry. Analysts are predicting lithium demand to roughly increase 10x over the next 10 years led by electric vehicles.
Last year, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk mentioned that he believes the energy density of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries has improved enough that it now makes sense to use the cheaper and cobalt-free batteries in its electric vehicles (EV).
“There’s a lot of different thinking about the product of the future. Just because of some cathode developments that have happened. Now Elon Musk is using lithium-ion phosphate in addition to NCA in his cars and saying the majority of his cars will probably be ion-based in the future.” – Global Lithium CEO Jow Lowry
Following a monumental year for lithium, investors will be wondering what is the future of lithium prices?
